Everything you need to know about learning to drive in Ireland — learner permits, test prep, and tips for new drivers.
Your teenager just asked ChatGPT to find a driving instructor nearby. The AI gave a confident, well-formatted answer. That answer may be completely wrong. Not wrong in a typo sense. Wrong in the sense that it cannot...
Your sat-nav says the quays are clear. Your sat-nav is lying. Learning to drive in Dublin is its own discipline. The city has tram tracks, segregated cycle paths that appeared last year, bus corridors that will end your...
You've booked your first lesson. Sixty euro, grand. You think you know what this is going to cost. You don't. The instructor's hourly rate is the most visible number in a long list of expenses that nobody puts in front...
You opened that renewal email, saw the number, and checked it twice. Still wrong, apparently. Except it isn't. Young driver insurance in Ireland has climbed sharply since late 2024, and the reasons go beyond the usual...
You open the envelope. Or the email. Or you just sit there staring at the comparison site. Four thousand euro. For a 2015 Ford Focus with 140,000km on it that you're sharing with your mam. Welcome to being a young...
Your first insurance quote lands and you genuinely think there's been a typo. There hasn't. Welcome to young driver insurance in Ireland, where a 2018 Toyota Yaris with 90,000km on the clock costs more to insure than...
You handed over the keys, breathed through it, and told yourself the insurance was sorted. What most Irish parents don't realise is that "sorted" and "covered" are not always the same thing. Young...
Your mate got his full licence last year. Took him three attempts at the test, cost him close to four grand all in, and his first insurance quote came back at €3,200. He nearly choked on his breakfast roll. That story...
Your man opens the quote comparison site. Types in his age. Clicks. Stares at the screen. Closes the laptop. That's the ritual for most Irish drivers under 25 right now. The numbers coming back aren't typos. A...
Your driving instructor didn't just raise their rates to annoy you. Petrol crept past €1.80 a litre, diesel followed close behind, and the cost of running a dual-controlled Volkswagen Polo around county roads all day...
You passed your driving test. Brilliant. Now open your first insurance quote and watch the colour drain from your face. For young drivers in Ireland, the post-test policy is where the real shock hits. Not the lessons....
Your first insurance quote as a young driver in Ireland lands like a cold slap. Four figures. Sometimes five. For a 2012 Volkswagen Polo with 90,000km on the clock. This isn't bad luck. It's the system working exactly...
You pass your test on a Tuesday. By Thursday you're staring at a quote for €2,800 and wondering if you've made a terrible mistake. You haven't. But the insurer is absolutely hoping you think you have. The Irish motor...
The number sitting in your quote comparison tab right now is not a typo. That is what Irish insurers charge a 17-year-old with a provisional licence and no claims history. Welcome to the road. Before you even turn a...
Your driving instructor spent forty minutes last Tuesday explaining clutch control on a 2019 Volkswagen Polo. That same evening, a Hyundai Ioniq 6 pulled silently out of the test centre car park and nearly gave a...
Your first lesson quote just landed in your inbox and you're staring at it like it's a tax bill. Welcome to learning to drive in 2026. Swords has no shortage of driving instructors. Finding a good one at a price that...
Your instructor mentioned roundabouts. You nodded. Then you drove into Swords for the first time and realised nobody mentioned these roundabouts. Swords is a satellite town that grew fast and was stitched together with...
Your learner permit is sorted, your EDT lessons are ticked off, and you're ready to book the test. Then you search "Swords driving test centre" and find precisely nothing. Because there isn't one. Never has...
You've just got your learner permit and you live in Swords. Good news: the roads here will teach you more in ten weeks than most learners pick up in a year. That's not entirely a compliment. North Dublin throws...
Your mate's cousin bought a nearly-new Hyundai Tucson and hasn't stopped talking about the lane-keeping assist. He thinks he's basically driving a spaceship. He is not driving a spaceship. This is the reality facing...
Your first lesson is on a 2009 Volkswagen Polo with a biting point somewhere around the knee of God. You stall it twice at the test centre entrance. The examiner makes a note. Welcome to learning to drive in Ireland....
Your examiner sat down, clicked their seatbelt, and said nothing. That silence is the test. Not the three-point turn. Not the hill start. The question they're answering for the next half hour is simple: does this person...
Your first car insurance quote lands in your inbox and it reads like a legal document drafted by someone who genuinely dislikes you. Forty-three pages. Words you've never seen before. A premium that makes your eyes...
Your driving instructor has forty-five minutes with you. They're spending it on clutch control, observation, and not letting you take out a bollard on a left turn. Fair enough. But there's a whole category of knowledge...
Your first time on a motorway, you'll probably grip the wheel a little tighter than usual. That's fine. Everyone does. The fear is understandable. You've been doing 50km/h through estates and roundabouts for months....
You've booked the theory test. You've skimmed a few questions online. You're thinking: how hard can it be? Harder than you think, if you go in underprepared. Easier than you think, if you don't. What You're Actually...
Your instructor drops you home after lesson four. You felt good. Shoulders relaxed, clutch control almost human. Then you don't sit behind a wheel for three weeks. Lesson five arrives and you're back to gripping the...
You've booked it. The lesson is tomorrow. And now you're lying awake wondering if you'll stall at a junction, mount a kerb, or somehow manage both simultaneously. Relax. Everyone does exactly this. The first lesson is...
The Learner Driver's Guide to Understanding Fuel Grades and EV Charging Speeds You pull up to your first solo fill at a petrol station. Three nozzles. Two grades. A diesel pump that's a different colour entirely. Your...
You know the driver. We all know the driver. Straddling two lanes on the M50, floating gently across the white lines like they are suggestions rather than rules, completely oblivious to the quiet rage building in every...
Picture this. November. A back road in Roscommon. It has been raining since Tuesday (it is now Friday). You come into a bend a touch too fast, the back end steps out, and suddenly you are a passenger in your own car....
The clutch is the enemy. Ask anyone who's stalled at a busy junction in Galway while a bus queue watches. Ask anyone who's rolled backwards on a hill start in Cork with a van two inches from their bumper. The clutch is...
Before you can learn to drive in Ireland, you need a learner permit. Before you can get a learner permit, you need a small mountain of paperwork. This is Ireland. Paperwork is how we show love. The permit is your legal...
You have done the twelve lessons. You can reverse around a corner without mounting the kerb. You parallel park like someone who has been doing it for years. And yet here you are, at three in the morning, staring at the...
So you're coming to Ireland. Good choice. The scenery is spectacular, the people are sound, and the roads will terrify you. Not because they're dangerous. Because they're narrow, they're on the wrong side (from your...
Look inside a manual car and you'll see three pedals and a gear stick. Look inside an automatic and there are two pedals and a selector that says P, R, N, D. That's it. No clutch. No gear lever. You put it in Drive,...
